Hot weather and rains forecast for Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is bracing for continued hot weather, with the National Meteorological Institute (Indomet) forecasting scattered showers and potential thunderstorms across much of the country through Saturday. While a weather trough influencing the region is beginning to move away, its departure will not bring immediate relief from the heat.

Indomet reports that during the mornings, increased cloudiness and isolated showers are likely in coastal areas such as La Altagracia, San Pedro de Macorís, La Romana, the Greater Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, Barahona, and Pedernales. These conditions are attributed to the prevailing winds. In the afternoons, the lingering moisture, combined with daytime heating and local topography, is expected to trigger more significant cloud development, leading to downpours, possible lightning, and gusty winds.

These afternoon storms are anticipated in inland provinces including Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, La Vega, Santiago Rodríguez, and San Juan. Indomet emphasizes that temperatures will remain elevated due to the season, recommending that people stay well-hydrated, wear light-colored clothing, limit sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and seek cool, ventilated spaces. Minimum temperatures are expected to range between 23°C and 25°C, with maximums reaching 33°C to 35°C, posing a particular risk to children, the elderly, and pregnant women.

Looking ahead to Friday, the morning is predicted to be mostly sunny with minimal rain. However, afternoon cloudiness and showers are still possible due to local effects and wind interaction, particularly in Monte Plata, Monseñor Nouel, La Vega, Santiago Rodríguez, and San Juan. By Saturday, a less humid air mass and Saharan dust are expected to limit precipitation. Despite this, afternoon cloud build-up with local showers, thunderstorms, and wind gusts may still occur in several provinces due to the combined influence of wind, topography, daytime heating, and an approaching tropical wave.
