How Panama’s MLB Players Are Performing This Season

Panama’s baseball contingent continues to make its mark in Major League Baseball, with starting catchers, established infielders and speedy baserunners representing the country in the regular season’s decisive stretch.

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Iván Herrera leads the Panamanian group in several offensive categories. He has played 137 games, collected 125 hits in 514 at-bats for a .243 average, scored 82 runs and hit 14 home runs. Herrera also has 55 RBIs, eight stolen bases, 67 walks and 111 strikeouts.

José “Chema” Caballero has played 116 games for the New York Yankees. The infielder and shortstop is hitting .241, with 88 hits in 365 at-bats, 43 runs, 12 home runs and 47 RBIs. His 31 stolen bases stand out as the highest total listed for the Panamanian players.

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya has appeared in 73 games and is batting .230, with 43 hits in 187 at-bats. He has scored 30 runs, hit five home runs and driven in 22 runs. Philadelphia Phillies utility player Edmundo Sosa has played 70 games, batting .236 with 47 hits, six home runs, 39 RBIs and three stolen bases.

Leonardo Jiménez, a young shortstop with the Miami Marlins, has played 65 games while continuing to gain experience in the National League. He is batting .204, with 33 hits in 162 at-bats, 18 runs, two home runs, 14 RBIs and one stolen base.
