José ‘Chema’ Caballero celebrates birthday with home run in Yankees’ rout of Red Sox

José “Chema” Caballero marked his birthday with a home run and a dominant Yankees victory over the Boston Red Sox. New York won 16-1 on Sunday, Aug. 30, while the Panamanian shortstop produced one of the game’s standout performances.

Caballero hit his 13th homer of the season in the eighth inning against Andruw Monasterio. The three-run shot formed part of a nine-run rally by the Yankees in the inning. He finished 3-for-5, scored three times and drove in three runs, lifting his batting average to .241.

Another Panamanian catcher, Iván Herrera, recorded two hits in five at-bats and drove in two runs for the St. Louis Cardinals. Pittsburgh defeated the Cardinals 5-4, and Herrera’s average rose to .243.

Leonardo Jiménez played both third and first base for the Miami Marlins in their 6-2 win over the Washington Nationals. He went hitless in three at-bats but scored in the ninth inning on Joe Mack’s sacrifice fly. Jiménez’s run came during Miami’s six-run rally in the final inning, and his season average stood at .204.
