Human Trafficking Ringleader Gets 6 Years for Threatening to Throw Migrants Overboard

In a significant victory for law enforcement and a stern warning to human traffickers, the ringleader of a smuggling operation has been handed a heavy prison sentence. Li Jia-hao was sentenced to six years for his role in attempting to illegally bring 24 Vietnamese nationals to Taiwan, a case that exposed a shocking level of cruelty and extortion.

The operation, orchestrated by Li and his associates, involved charging each migrant NT$250,000 for passage. However, once aboard the fishing vessel 'Jin Cai Man No. 8,' the migrants were subjected to further demands. The traffickers threatened to push them into the sea if they did not pay an additional NT$150,000 each, a terrifying ordeal that highlights the desperation and brutality inherent in such criminal enterprises.

The Coast Guard's timely interception of the vessel off the coast of Penghu prevented the migrants from being transferred ashore and brought the perpetrators to justice. The court's decision to sentence Li Jia-hao to six years, with other defendants receiving sentences ranging from one year and two months to four years, sends a clear message that such heinous crimes will not be tolerated.
