Hundreds of Manbaul Hikam Students Fall Ill After Suspected MBG Food Poisoning, Sidoarjo Regent Denies Deaths

Sidoarjo Regent Subandi rejected reports that any students had died after suspected food poisoning at the Manbaul Hikam Islamic boarding school in East Java.

“There were no deaths, and all patients have been treated properly. If there are reports saying someone died, they are not true,” Subandi said after visiting patients at R.T. Notopuro Regional Hospital on Tuesday.

About 200 students were being treated at Notopuro, another 15 at Delta Surya Hospital and 58 at Siti Hajar Islamic Hospital. The total number of hospitalized students stood at about 273.

Subandi said medical teams were monitoring all the patients and that their condition was improving. Some had already been allowed to go home after doctors declared them healthy. Students who still needed care would remain under hospital supervision before returning home, he said.

Ambulances carrying students were still arriving at the emergency department at 9:50 p.m., while hundreds of relatives remained at the hospital. Subandi urged families not to panic and said local authorities and the hospitals would continue providing care until all patients recovered.
