Hundreds of Students Discuss Global Issues at AYIMUN Depok

A total of 315 students from 118 schools and universities nationwide gathered in Depok for the Asia Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN) Depok Chapter, held August 1-2, 2026. Participants engaged in simulated United Nations sessions to discuss critical global issues, including education and digital security, as well as cybercrime.

The conference drew students from elementary to university levels across various regions, including Jabodetabek, Sukabumi, South Sumatra, Magelang, Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Surabaya, and Bali. Organized by the International Global Network (IGN) in collaboration with Sekolah Islam Terpadu (SIT) Al Haraki, the event aimed to foster skills essential for the future.

Minister of Basic and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti, who opened the event, highlighted that such conferences are vital for students to develop crucial skills like critical thinking, negotiation, problem-solving, adaptability, and collaboration. He stressed that success hinges not only on hard skills but also on soft skills, urging participants to leverage AYIMUN to build their aspirations and represent Indonesia on the global stage.

Depok Deputy Mayor Chandra Rahmansyah noted that the international simulation provides a platform for participants to practice articulating ideas, respecting diverse viewpoints, and reaching consensus through dialogue. Muhammad Fahrizal, President of the International Global Network, pointed out that the rapid advancement of digital technology presents new challenges, such as the spread of misinformation and the rise of cyber threats. He underscored the importance of strengthening critical thinking and digital literacy to prepare the younger generation for these changes.

The AYIMUN Depok Chapter convened under the theme "Securing the Digital Future: Protecting Societies and Empowering the Next Generation." Participants were divided into two main councils: UNICEF, focusing on "Ensuring Quality Education for Every Child" for ages 11-14, and UNODC, addressing "Mitigating the Worst Impacts of Illicit Online Activities: Illegal Gambling and Cybercrime" for those 15 and older. The conference included simulated UN sessions, negotiations, and the drafting of resolutions.
