Adelabu asserts that his departure was with the full approval and blessing of the President, directly refuting earlier media speculations that he had resigned against Tinubu's wishes.

Adelabu's statement, released through his media aide, Femi Awogboro, aimed to quash rumors that he defied the President, emphasizing that his decision was fully consented to. He further suggested that criticisms surrounding his exit were unfounded and driven by envy of the large turnout that welcomed him back to Ibadan.

The former minister's clarification comes amidst reports suggesting he insisted on leaving the cabinet to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State, despite alleged presidential attempts to dissuade him. His resignation letter, dated April 22, 2026, was addressed to the President via the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. This move aligns with a recent Presidency directive, issued on March 17, requiring political appointees intending to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign by March 31, 2026, in accordance with electoral laws.
