ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan Dismissed Over Harassment Allegations

Member states of the International Criminal Court (ICC) have voted to dismiss Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan following allegations of sexual harassment. The decision, announced by the ICC's oversight body, saw 82 out of 125 member states vote in favor of Khan's removal.

The accusations against Khan involve the alleged sexual harassment of a female subordinate. These concerns reportedly surfaced within the ICC in May 2024 and became public knowledge a few months later. Sources cited by The Guardian suggested that Khan had touched the woman without her consent and, along with a close colleague, attempted to pressure her into retracting her claims.

More recently, the accuser reportedly detailed more serious allegations, including coercion into sex, to United Nations investigators. In an interview with CNN, the woman stated that she feared losing her job and visa to the Netherlands if she refused Khan's advances, emphasizing that Khan was not just her boss but everyone's boss, implying consent was not possible.

Karim Khan, a British lawyer, was elected ICC Chief Prosecutor in 2021. He had previously advanced arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as Russian President Vladimir Putin. Khan has denied all accusations and, according to his lawyer, plans to appeal Friday's decision. He had stepped aside from his duties in May last year and was suspended last month pending the outcome of the vote.
