Icelandic guide on disaster preparedness delayed until autumn

Iceland's planned public guide on disaster and conflict preparedness has been pushed back to the autumn, officials announced. The booklet, intended to equip citizens with knowledge on how to prepare for and react to emergencies, was initially slated for release in late February or early March.

Similar guides have already been distributed across other Nordic nations, prompted by concerns over escalating threats, particularly from Russia. The Icelandic government views public preparedness as crucial in the face of such geopolitical tensions.

Runólfur Þórhallsson, a senior superintendent in the National Police Commissioner's civil defense department, explained the delay. He cited the project's extensive scope and the necessity for thorough coordination among various agencies. "This called for good consultation with a number of parties and therefore took longer than expected," Þórhallsson stated.

Compounding the timeline were the summer holiday period, preparations for a solar eclipse, and ongoing discussions about Iceland's relationship with the European Union. These factors collectively impacted the capacity of government bodies and emergency responders to dedicate sufficient time to the guide's finalization. Consequently, the decision was made to postpone the publication.

The delay underscores the challenges in producing comprehensive public safety materials, especially in a complex geopolitical climate. The aim remains to deliver a robust and informative guide that effectively prepares the Icelandic public for potential crises.
