Iconic 'The Dreamers' Play Premieres in Athens

The iconic "The Dreamers" is set to captivate audiences at the Synchrono Theatro in Athens from October 3, 2026, for a strictly limited engagement.

Directed by Konstantinos Rigos, the stage adaptation by Tom Kinninmont brings to life Gilbert Adair's novel, which gained international acclaim through Bernardo Bertolucci's cinematic masterpiece. The production features a trio of talented young actors: Ino Athanasiadou as Isabelle, Vasilis Boutsikos as Theo, and Nikolas Chalkiadakis as Matthew.

The play transports viewers to Paris in May 1968. Amidst the backdrop of widespread protests, barricades, and political slogans, American student Matthew arrives to improve his French. He soon encounters the enigmatic twins, Theo and Isabelle, with whom he shares an intense, almost sacred devotion to cinema. Together, they retreat into a private utopia defined by desire, film, and a dangerous game of power and intimacy, until history inevitably intrudes.

Kinninmont's adaptation, praised for its exploration of the power of images and the limitations of fantasy against harsh reality, serves as a love story, a coming-of-age drama, a political commentary, and a nostalgic homage to the French New Wave. Rigos's direction highlights the tension between personal liberation and societal obligation, the yearning for escape, and the unavoidable confrontation with the real world.
