Idris Elba denies being a candidate for James Bond, citing market acceptance

Idris Elba has addressed persistent speculation about him potentially taking over the role of James Bond, stating that such discussions were never "real." The actor, currently promoting his film "Masters of the Universe," told British GQ that reports linking him to the iconic 007 agent position were unfounded.

Elba, 53, acknowledged that he was frequently mentioned as a potential successor to Daniel Craig. However, he expressed that he never seriously considered the possibility. "I always felt that it wasn't real," Elba said. "James Bond was written as he was written, for a reason. I was flattered that people were talking about me, but realistically, some markets just wouldn't accept it."

The actor pointed to the global nature of the James Bond franchise, suggesting that audiences in certain regions might not be receptive to a Black actor, specifically of African descent, portraying the character. "Bond is huge worldwide. And audiences everywhere wouldn't accept a Black man playing Bond. It's not something they like in their culture. Period," Elba stated.

Furthermore, Elba shared his views on the evolution of the James Bond character in contemporary culture. He believes the character, created by Ian Fleming, should not stray too far from his original conception. "Bond is so unrealistic that a bit of realism is good, but don't try to make him 'woke'," he commented, emphasizing that the series' strength lies in its escapist nature. Elba concluded that creators should remain faithful to the character's origins, allowing Bond to simply "be Bond."
