IFAB admits VAR error led to Breel Embolo's red card in Switzerland vs. Argentina World Cup match

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has admitted a mistake in the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system's application during the 2026 World Cup quarterfinal match between Switzerland and Argentina. The error resulted in Swiss striker Breel Embolo being wrongly sent off, a decision that significantly impacted the game's outcome.

IFAB released a clarification stating that Embolo should not have received a second yellow card, which led to his expulsion. The review process, particularly concerning "mistaken identity" protocols, was deemed incorrectly applied in this instance. The incident occurred in the 72nd minute, just moments after Switzerland had equalized the score to 1-1.

Initially, Argentina's Leandro Paredes received a yellow card for a foul on Embolo. However, the VAR officials intervened, suggesting to the referee that Paredes had not committed a foul. Instead, Embolo was judged to have simulated a foul, leading to the referee rescinding the initial decision and booking Embolo.

Playing with ten men, Switzerland lost momentum, allowing Argentina to exploit their numerical superiority. Argentina went on to win the match 3-1 in extra time, securing their place in the semifinals. The referee's decision drew widespread criticism, with even Egypt, a previous opponent of Argentina, questioning the call.
