Incheon Education Chief Race: Conservatives Unite, Progressives Split

Incheon's educational landscape is set for a divided race on the progressive side, while the conservative camp has successfully unified its forces. Lee Dae-hyung emerged as the sole conservative candidate for Superintendent of Education after winning a unification race, signaling a consolidated effort from the right. Lee expressed his determination, stating, "Our names may be different, but our hearts are one. We have received the mission to change Incheon's education and will surely win."

Conversely, the progressive camp faces a significant split. The Incheon Democratic Progressive Education Superintendent Promotion Committee has nominated Lim Byeong-gu as its candidate. However, the incumbent Superintendent, Do Sung-hoon, who previously succeeded in unification efforts, has decided to run as an independent candidate this time. Lim Byeong-gu emphasized his role as a representative of the progressive movement, declaring, "I will run as the Democratic Progressive Education Superintendent candidate Lim Byeong-gu, and I believe you will all support that Lim Byeong-gu."

This fragmentation within the progressive bloc is unprecedented since the direct election of education superintendents began in 2010. While the possibility of a last-minute unification still exists, particularly if Do Sung-hoon agrees to participate under the promotion committee's established methods, the current division highlights a complex political dynamic. The outcome of this election will significantly shape the future direction of education in Incheon, with voters facing a choice between a unified conservative front and a divided progressive field.
