Indian Activist Ends 26-Day Hunger Strike Amid Protest Violence Fears

Activist Sonam Wangchuk has ended a 26-day hunger strike in India, reaching an agreement with the government and citing the risk of escalating violence as key factors in his decision. Wangchuk, a prominent figure in the 'Cockroach' youth movement protests, broke his fast at a hospital in Gurugram, near New Delhi, in the presence of government ministers and local leaders.

The protests, initially triggered by alleged irregularities and leaks in crucial official examinations such as the NEET-UG for medical school admissions, have evolved into a broader expression of youth frustration. Millions of young Indians compete annually for limited university spots and public sector jobs, fueling widespread discontent over opportunities and government policies under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Wangchuk stated that his decision to end the fast followed extensive negotiations on "various conditions" and a desire to prevent potential violence. The movement, known as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), had planned further national protests, including a march toward Parliament demanding the education minister's resignation, escalating tensions in the capital.

Recent days have seen increased confrontations between protesters and riot police in New Delhi, with videos circulating on social media showing young people facing off against anti-riot vehicles and police wielding batons. The CJP holds the education minister politically responsible for the examination scandals, which have become a focal point for a generation grappling with economic pressures and a perceived lack of viable pathways to success.
