Indonesia Achieves Food Self-Sufficiency in Eight Commodities Within One Year, President Says

President Prabowo Subianto announced Indonesia's achievement of self-sufficiency in eight strategic food commodities, a goal accomplished in just one year, significantly ahead of the initial four-year target.

"Because of our policies and our hard work, food self-sufficiency that we once targeted to achieve in four years, we actually managed to achieve in one year," Prabowo stated during a joint session of the People's Consultative Assembly and the Regional Representative Council on Friday (14/8/2026).

The eight commodities that have reached self-sufficiency are rice, corn, consumption sugar, broiler chicken meat, broiler eggs, shallots, large chilies, and bird chilies. National production for these items now surpasses domestic demand, according to 2026 food balance projections.

For rice, production is estimated at 34.77 million tons against a national need of 31.10 million tons, resulting in a surplus of 3.67 million tons. Corn production is projected at 18 million tons, exceeding the 16.44 million ton requirement, with a surplus of 1.56 million tons. Consumption sugar production is expected to reach 3.04 million tons, surpassing the 2.84 million ton need, leaving a surplus of 207,000 tons.

The livestock sector also shows positive performance, with broiler chicken meat production projected at 4.90 million tons against a demand of 4.02 million tons, yielding a surplus of 876,000 tons. Broiler egg production is estimated at 6.99 million tons, exceeding the 6.47 million ton requirement by 516,000 tons. Horticultural commodities also contribute positively, with large chilies producing 1.52 million tons against a need of 929,000 tons (a surplus of 588,000 tons), and bird chilies producing 1.51 million tons against a need of 914,000 tons (a surplus of 595,000 tons). Shallot production is projected at 1.32 million tons, meeting the national need of 1.25 million tons with a surplus of 63,000 tons.
