Indonesia Beat Australia 2-0 to Reach the 2027 AFC U-20 Asian Cup

Indonesia secured a place in the 2027 AFC U-20 Asian Cup with a commanding 2-0 victory over Australia at the Lao National Stadium KM16 on Sunday. The result put Nova Arianto's Garuda Muda side at the top of Group H and made the final group match between Malaysia and Laos irrelevant to the race for first place.

The breakthrough came in the 28th minute after Indonesia pressed Australia into retreat. Muhamad Zahaby Gholy played a clever pass for Theodore Evan Leeming, who timed his run to beat the offside trap. Leeming lifted the ball over Australian goalkeeper Robert James Almeida Cook, then headed in his own rebound to give Indonesia the lead.

Indonesia had threatened earlier through Fabio Azkairawan and Amar Rayhan Brkic. Muhamad Ibrah Ardiansyah also headed wide from Gholy's corner in the 25th minute. Leeming nearly added another before halftime, but his left-footed shot after cutting in from the left went over the crossbar.

Australia increased the pressure after the interval, yet Indonesia's organized defense limited Trevor Brian Morgan's team to few clear chances. Beckham Nicolez Soares Baker won a dangerous free kick in the 83rd minute, but goalkeeper Dafa Al Gasemi dealt with the attempt routinely.

With Australia pushing for an equalizer, Indonesia found space on the counterattack in stoppage time. Amar struck a right-footed shot past Cook at the near post in the 92nd minute to complete the 2-0 win. Indonesia finished the group stage with seven points from three matches, five goals scored and three clean sheets. The 2027 AFC U-20 Asian Cup will be held in China in March next year, with the tournament serving as Asia's main qualifying route to the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
