Indonesia Customs foils $4 million gold smuggling attempt at Jakarta airport

Authorities at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport have successfully thwarted two separate attempts to smuggle a significant quantity of gold out of Indonesia. In a joint operation, customs officials and airport security apprehended seven Chinese nationals and one airport employee involved in the illicit export of 23.793 kilograms of gold. The total value of the seized gold is estimated at Rp63 billion (approximately $4 million USD).

The smuggled gold was reportedly bound for two international destinations: China and Dubai. The operation, which took place on Thursday, August 13, 2026, underscores the vigilance of Indonesian customs in combating cross-border smuggling activities. The individuals apprehended are currently under investigation for their alleged roles in the smuggling scheme.

Officials emphasized the importance of robust surveillance at the country's exit points as a vital layer of defense against the trafficking of high-value commodities.
