Indonesia deploys heavy equipment to clear earthquake-induced landslides in East Nusa Tenggara

Indonesia's Ministry of Public Works is rapidly responding to the aftermath of a powerful earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara on August 15, 2026. The 7.7 magnitude quake, centered near Nagekeo-Mbay, caused significant damage, including landslides that blocked crucial national roads.

Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo expressed deep condolences to the affected communities and pledged full support for recovery efforts. He instructed regional offices to enhance preparedness and provide assistance, emphasizing the importance of personnel, heavy equipment, and local government coordination to restore damaged infrastructure.

The Ministry of Public Works will continue to support handling efforts in the field as needed.

The ministry's National Road Implementation Agency (BPJN) NTT is already on the ground, monitoring and identifying infrastructure damage. Initial assessments revealed numerous landslides blocking national roads across several routes, including Malwatar-Ruteng, Ruteng-Reo, and Ende-Wolowaru.

To maintain connectivity and ensure road functionality, heavy equipment has been deployed to affected areas. Loaders and excavators are clearing landslide debris to facilitate public access and disaster response operations. However, a comprehensive safety inspection of bridges and all national roads is pending due to the ongoing risk of aftershocks, with teams prioritizing immediate debris removal.
