Indonesia Destroys 1.3 Tons of Ketamine in Joint Operation, Saving Millions

A significant joint operation in Indonesia has led to the destruction of 1.3 tons of ketamine, a powerful anesthetic with a growing illicit use as a recreational drug. The symbolic destruction ceremony took place in Batam, Riau Islands, involving key government agencies including Customs, the Indonesian Navy, National Police, the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), and the State Intelligence Agency (BIN).

The ketamine, seized from the ship MV King Sun in the waters north of Berakit, Riau Islands on August 6, 2026, was destroyed using a mobile incinerator owned by the BNN. This action is a critical step in the legal process of handling seized narcotics and reinforces the commitment to protecting the public from the pervasive threat of drug trafficking.

Dirjen Bea dan Cukai (Director General of Customs and Excise), Letjen TNI (Purn) Djaka Budhi Utama, highlighted the importance of inter-agency synergy, from intelligence gathering and surveillance to apprehension and evidence handling. He stated that this collaboration is key to preventing narcotics from entering and circulating within Indonesia. The successful interception was attributed to comprehensive intelligence analysis, initiated by information from Thai authorities in mid-May 2026 regarding the MV King Sun. Further intelligence from Thailand in late May and intensive monitoring by Indonesian agencies confirmed the ship's suspected involvement in drug transport.

The operation culminated in early August 2026 when Polri (Indonesian National Police) informed Customs of suspected drug smuggling activities involving the same vessel. This led to the MV King Sun being designated a target, prompting a coordinated joint operation. The successful disruption of this smuggling attempt is estimated to have saved approximately 6.68 million lives from potential addiction and harm.
