Indonesia hikes fee for renouncing citizenship fivefold starting August 2026

Indonesia is set to significantly increase the cost for citizens wishing to renounce their Indonesian citizenship. Effective August 2026, the fee for applying to release one's Indonesian citizenship status will jump from Rp 1 million to Rp 5 million, a fivefold increase.

The new regulation, Government Regulation (PP) No. 30 of 2026, was officially issued and signed by President Prabowo Subianto on July 2, 2026. Dhahana Putra, Director General of Laws and Regulations at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, confirmed the regulation's authenticity. The rule will become effective 30 days after its promulgation.

According to Widodo, Director General of General Legal Administration at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, the tariff adjustment is driven by two primary factors: a restructuring of ministries following the separation of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, and a push for digital transformation to enhance service quality within the ministry. Widodo emphasized that the Rp 5 million fee covers a rigorous verification process involving multiple ministries and agencies to ensure all obligations are met before citizenship is officially relinquished.

PP No. 30 of 2026 supersedes the previous regulation, PP No. 45 of 2024. The updated fee structure also includes adjustments for other citizenship-related services. These include a Rp 3.5 million fee for a Certificate of Loss of Indonesian Citizenship, Rp 1 million for reapplying for Indonesian citizenship, Rp 1 million for a Certificate of Remaining Indonesian Citizen, and Rp 500,000 per application for a Certificate of Citizenship Status. All these adjusted fees fall under the category of Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP) managed by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.
