Indonesia-Kuwait trade hits $606 mln, says ambassador

The relationship between Indonesia and Kuwait is strengthening across political, economic, investment, and cultural spheres, according to Lena Maryana, the Indonesian Ambassador to Kuwait. Trade volume between the two nations saw a notable increase, reaching $606 million in 2025 from $547.5 million in 2024. Despite this growth, Ambassador Maryana emphasized that the current trade figures do not reflect the full potential between the two countries. Indonesian exports to Kuwait amounted to $193 million in 2025, while imports from Kuwait were $412.5 million. Kuwait is ranked 66th for Indonesian exports and 42nd for imports. The ambassador expressed optimism for continued annual trade growth of at least 10 percent, aiming for a more balanced trade relationship. Looking ahead, both countries are preparing for significant bilateral engagements. These include the second Joint Ministerial Committee meeting and the inaugural political consultations scheduled for November. Additionally, arrangements are being finalized for the first Indonesian-Kuwaiti Energy Forum to be held in Indonesia. The ambassador also expressed hope for the finalization of a free trade agreement between Indonesia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries within the current year. Investment cooperation is also on a positive trajectory, with Kuwaiti investments primarily focused on the oil and gas sector through Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (KUFPEC). Kuwaiti foreign direct investment in Indonesia experienced a 20.26 percent increase compared to 2024. Tourism figures show a steady rise, with 5,166 Kuwaiti tourists visiting Indonesia in 2025, an increase from previous years. The ambassador also highlighted Indonesia's desire to expand cultural and educational ties, commending Kuwait's scholarship programs for Indonesian students and the humanitarian efforts of Kuwaiti charities in Indonesia. Kuwait currently hosts over 6,000 Indonesian citizens, who are employed in various sectors including health, oil and gas, hospitality, and manufacturing. The ambassador praised Kuwait's role in global humanitarian and relief efforts, noting the contributions of Kuwaiti charities in establishing and operating schools in rural Indonesian areas.
