Indonesia Moves Towards Single National Identity Based on NIK

Indonesia is establishing a foundational Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) centered on its National Identity Number (NIK) and Digital Identity (IKD). These digital instruments are no longer just identifiers but are becoming the bedrock for interconnected public services, ensuring efficiency and accuracy.

Handayani Ningrum, Director of National Population Data Integration at the Ministry of Home Affairs' Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil), emphasized that digital transformation is impossible without a reliable digital identity. NIK serves as the single national identity, while IKD functions as its digital counterpart, forming the two main pillars of Indonesia's DPI.

"We are building the foundation of DPI to realize government services that are integrated, inclusive, secure, and sustainable," Ningrum stated in a press release. The DPI framework rests on three pillars: digital identity, data exchange, and digital payments. The Dukcapil Directorate General plays a dual role as the provider of the single national identity and the operator of IKD, managing population data while safeguarding digital security, privacy, and public trust.

Indonesia's journey toward digitalizing population administration has moved from manual systems to a Single National Identity system, underpinned by NIK, biometric data, and IKD. To date, electronic ID card (KTP) registration has reached 97.28% of the eligible population, approximately 208.5 million individuals. The adoption of IKD has also seen significant growth, with over 20.59 million users.
