Indonesia: No Blockade for Protestors, Top Minister Assures

Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security Djamari Chaniago has assured that Indonesian authorities will not obstruct citizens exercising their right to protest. Addressing concerns about potential blockades for the August 27 demonstrations in Jakarta, Chaniago stated, "There are no blockades. We will not block people expressing their aspirations. Please come," he told reporters.

The minister emphasized that the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) will support the police in securing the protests, particularly those planned in front of the legislative complex. Both the Jakarta Metropolitan Police and Kodam Jaya will provide services and security, including traffic management to mitigate disruptions.

Chaniago urged all parties to help maintain a secure environment in Jakarta, despite reports of 86 protest locations across the city. "Let us all help keep Jakarta safe. Our country is large. Don't worry about the numbers because protests happen daily in Indonesia. Today, there are many in Jakarta alone," he said, referring to the Kapolda Metro Jaya's report of 86 sites nationwide.

The protests, organized by various community groups including the Alliance of United Pati People (AMPB), aim to pressure the parliament to pass the Asset Forfeiture Bill and implement maximum penalties, including the death penalty, for corruptors. Security forces are prioritizing a humanistic approach, with officers deployed without firearms to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for demonstrators.
