Indonesia's August Reshuffle: Focus on Deputy Defense Minister Role

Speculation is mounting that Indonesia's cabinet could undergo a reshuffle in August 2026, with particular attention on the position of Deputy Defense Minister. This role became vacant after Marshal (Ret.) Donny Ermawan Taufanto was appointed Governor of the Indonesian Republic University.

Norman Joesoef, the CEO of Republikorp, has emerged as a potential candidate for the Deputy Defense Minister position. Joesoef has a background in the defense industry, having been involved in the export of defense equipment since 2013. However, the final decision on his appointment rests with the President of Indonesia.

Intelligence and defense analyst Wawan H Purwanto commented on the potential changes, emphasizing that the President's prerogative is key in selecting a trusted figure. He stated that the primary criteria for such a role are trust and capability in the defense sector.

"The change in the Deputy Defense Minister position is the President's prerogative to get the most trusted figure. The ideal parameter used is the factor of trust and capability in the defense sector to guarantee the achievement of national interests and security," Wawan told the media in Jakarta on Sunday (August 9, 2026).
