Indonesia to Review Citizenship Fee Hikes After Public Criticism

Indonesia's Minister of Law, Supratman Andi Agtas, announced a review of increased fees for citizenship services after public backlash. The proposed hikes, detailed in Government Regulation No. 30 of 2026, would charge Rp75 million for changing citizenship, Rp25 million for naturalization via marriage, and Rp5 million for losing citizenship. These fees were slated to begin on August 1, 2026.

Supratman stated the review will involve internal discussions with the Directorate General of General Legal Administration and the Directorate General of Intellectual Property. He acknowledged the ministry's responsibility for any necessary adjustments to the policy, which was initially proposed to the President.

The evaluation will be conducted through internal meetings with the Directorate General of General Legal Administration and the Directorate General of Intellectual Property.

The minister emphasized that the fee increase proposal underwent prior review. He explained the evaluation aims to address public concerns without disregarding the policy's original objectives. Supratman also pointed out that the new fees are in line with international practices, where some countries charge fees from the application stage, even if approval is not guaranteed. In contrast, Indonesia's fees are applied only after a citizenship request is approved.
