Indonesian Customs Seize 2,000 Illegal Cigarettes Shipped via Expedition Service

Customs and Excise officers in Cilacap, Indonesia, successfully intercepted a shipment of 2,000 illegal cigarettes being transported through an expedition service on August 5, 2026. The operation, a joint effort involving the Cilacap Customs Office, Kebumen Public Order Agency, police, and the transportation department, targeted a changing modus operandi in the distribution of untaxed tobacco products.

The joint operation began with surveillance along the Southern Cross Road in Kebumen Regency, a known distribution route. While initial checks of passing vehicles did not yield any illegal cigarette transports, the team extended their focus to an expedition company. Their inspection concentrated on packages originating from areas identified as centers for illegal cigarette production.

During the inspection, officers discovered eight packages containing cigarettes without excise bands, totaling 2,000 sticks. Rahmat, an official from the Cilacap Customs Office, explained that monitoring expedition companies is crucial due to a perceived shift in distribution trends. He noted that illegal cigarettes are increasingly being ordered online through e-commerce platforms and dispatched via delivery services.

"Therefore, surveillance is not only conducted on land distribution routes but also targets parcel delivery companies to prevent the circulation of illegal cigarettes from the outset," Rahmat stated. The findings will lead to further investigation of the recipient to determine appropriate legal action.

This operation underscores the commitment of Customs and Excise, in collaboration with local government and law enforcement, to curb the circulation of illegal excisable goods. Such efforts are vital to prevent potential state revenue losses, ensure fair business competition, and protect consumers from substandard products.
