Indonesian Islamic Group NU Urged to Embrace Global 'Soft Diplomacy'

Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), a prominent Indonesian Islamic organization, should extend its influence beyond national borders to become a global force for peace and harmony, according to Ali Masykur Musa. He asserts that in today's interconnected world, characterized by "borderless states," NU must broaden its role.

Musa explained that the rapid flow of information, technology, economics, and social interactions transcends national boundaries. Events in one country can quickly impact others, creating opportunities for NU to share Indonesian Islamic values globally. He believes NU is uniquely positioned to contribute to international harmony and address worldwide challenges.

He envisions NU engaging in "equilibrium diplomacy" to foster peaceful coexistence in an increasingly borderless world. Musa emphasized that achieving influence today requires diplomatic strength, distinguishing between "hard diplomacy," which is the domain of state apparatus like the Foreign Ministry, TNI, and Polri, and "soft diplomacy."

According to Musa, NU's strength lies in "soft diplomacy," utilizing its socio-religious influence, the values of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah, its network of clerics and Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), civil society engagement, and its tradition of dialogue and peace. This approach allows NU to exert influence through its established character and networks.

Therefore, Musa advocates for a broader perspective in NU's future leadership. He stated that the next General Chairman must understand global dynamics and geopolitical shifts, not just internal organizational issues. This global awareness is crucial for NU to effectively navigate and contribute to international affairs.
