Indonesian Lawmakers Meet Protesters Demanding Asset Seizure Bill

Several members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) engaged with demonstrators gathered outside the parliament building in Jakarta on Thursday. The protest centered on the urgent need for the passage of an Asset Seizure Bill.

Among the lawmakers who met the crowd were Andre Rosiade, Ahmad Syaikhu, and Rieke Diah Pitaloka. They joined Supriyono, also known as Botok, the coordinator of the Alliance of Pati Community Unity (AMPB), on a stage vehicle. Botok read a statement from the DPR leadership, pledging that the Asset Seizure Bill would be finalized no later than December 15, 2026.

"Fourth, the leadership of the DPR states its readiness to resign from its position as leader of the DPR RI if it cannot be resolved by that date," Botok announced to the assembled protesters. The statement drew applause from some, while others voiced continued dissatisfaction, demanding the bill be enacted sooner.

Lawmaker Andre Rosiade then addressed the crowd, reiterating the DPR's commitment to the December 15 deadline and inviting protesters to provide input during the deliberations with Commission III. However, Rosiade's presence on the stage vehicle was met with strong objections from some protesters, who demanded he step down, indicating a lack of trust in his assurances.

The protesters' demand for the Asset Seizure Bill highlights a significant public concern regarding the recovery of illicit assets. The commitment from DPR leadership, though met with skepticism by some, marks a step towards addressing this issue, with the legislative process now under close public scrutiny.
