Indonesian legends optimistic about national team's ASEAN Cup chances under new coach

Indonesian football legends Bambang Pamungkas and Cristian Gonzales expressed strong optimism about the national team's chances of winning the 2026 ASEAN Hyundai Cup, also known as the AFF Cup. Their confidence stems from the appointment of new coach John Herdman and the emergence of a promising generation of young players.

"Insya Allah this year we have John [Herdman] with a good enough squad, with many potential young players who bring new hope, hopefully this year can be our fortune," said Bambang Pamungkas, highlighting the blend of a new coaching philosophy and youthful energy as key factors for success. Indonesia has historically struggled in the tournament, never securing a title despite reaching the final six times.

Cristian Gonzales echoed Bambang's sentiments, expressing hope that Herdman can lead the team to end the long wait for a championship. Hopefully, it will be the best for him and also for our players," Gonzales stated.

The ASEAN Hyundai Cup trophy is currently on a tour in Indonesia, with public viewings and fan events held in Jakarta. The tournament is scheduled to run from July 24 to August 26, 2026. Indonesia will begin its campaign in Group A against Cambodia on July 27 at the Pakansari Stadium.
