Indonesian Parliament agrees to drop charges against students after protest

Leaders of Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR RI) met with student representatives on Friday, June 19, 2026, after a demonstration outside the parliament building in Jakarta.

The meeting, which lasted for an hour and a half, yielded several agreements. Vice Chairman of the DPR RI, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, stated that the students' demands were directly communicated to relevant ministers via phone calls. He assured that the aspirations of the students had been received and would be followed up.

A significant outcome of the meeting was the agreement to revoke the suspect status of 16 Trisakti University students involved in a previous protest. The DPR also agreed to release two Mercu Buana University students who were arrested before the demonstration began. These students had been detained for carrying gasoline, intended for the protest.

Regarding the 16 Trisakti students, whose status as suspects has not yet been processed, the Chairman of Commission III has communicated. Within the next week, God willing, the suspect status of those 16 Trisakti students will be revoked.

During the meeting, Vice Chairman Saan Mustopa, accompanied by Dasco Ahmad and Chairman of Commission III DPR Habiburokhman, outlined the points of agreement to the assembled students. The parliament committed to addressing the students' concerns, including the legal status of the Trisakti students and the release of the Mercu Buana students, signaling a step towards de-escalation.
