Indonesian police confirm one death after protest riots

Jakarta Metro Police have confirmed that one individual died following riots that broke out after a demonstration on Thursday, August 27, 2026. The unrest occurred near the DPR/MPR building in Senayan, Central Jakarta.

Police spokesperson Kombes Budi Hermanto stated that the victim was discovered during an evacuation in the Pejompongan area, which was experiencing ongoing disturbances. The individual was found unconscious and subsequently transported to Dr. Mintohardjo Naval Hospital, where efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.

The deceased was later moved to RS Polri Kramat Jati for identification. However, the family declined an autopsy, opting not to provide further statements at this time due to their grief. Police expressed understanding and empathy towards the family's situation.

Authorities are viewing this incident as a crucial lesson for future protest security. Hermanto stressed the importance of establishing safe zones not only for demonstrators but also for the general public residing near protest locations. "Creating safe spaces is not just for those conveying aspirations. There are other members of the public who must be protected, whose dignity, honor, life, and safety must be safeguarded," he said.

Reports circulating suggest the deceased was Bambang Setiyawan, 59, a resident of Bendungan Hilir, who lost his life amidst the mass riots on Jalan Pejompongan Raya.
