Indonesian university rector arrested in student admission bribery case

Indonesia's anti-corruption commission has named Akhmad Sodiq, the Rector of Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (Unsoed), as a suspect in a bribery case concerning the university's independent student admission process. The allegations suggest Sodiq engaged in manipulating admissions for personal financial benefit.

Lalu Hadrian Irfani, Deputy Speaker of Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives, expressed deep regret over the alleged irregularities. He emphasized that university admissions must be objective, transparent, accountable, and based on merit, not on personal connections or financial capacity. Irfani hopes this case will spur improvements in the admission system, particularly for independent pathways, to maintain public trust in higher education institutions.

Commission X plans to summon the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemendiktisaintek) to discuss strengthening governance in public university admissions following the Unsoed case. The commission had recently concluded its working committee on new student admission selection, which produced recommendations for future system improvements. The suspects, including Sodiq, his associates, and relatives, are currently detained for an initial 20-day period.
