Infantino Secures FIFA Board Support Amidst Crisis Over New Enterprise Plan

Despite facing significant pressure, particularly from UEFA, Gianni Infantino has successfully garnered the full support of FIFA's Board of Management. This backing came after a crisis meeting held in Rabat, addressing recent developments concerning a controversial FIFA plan.

The current crisis was triggered by the revelation of a FIFA initiative to establish a subsidiary named FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). This entity is intended to manage the men's World Cup and other FIFA events, with provisions to offer up to a 20% stake to external investors. The plan has raised concerns and led to calls for Infantino's resignation.

Gianni Vincenzo Infantino, born in Switzerland to Italian parents, pursued a law degree before embarking on a career in sports administration. He joined UEFA in 2000, steadily rising through the ranks to become its general secretary in 2009. During his tenure at UEFA, he was known for hosting major draws like the Champions League and Euros.

Infantino's path to the FIFA presidency was significantly influenced by the 2015 FIFA corruption scandal. Following the scandal and Sepp Blatter's subsequent resignation, an extraordinary FIFA Congress was convened in February 2016. Infantino, initially seen as an outsider, secured the presidency in the second round of voting. He pledged to reform the scandal-plagued organization and increase financial distributions to member associations, promising to restore FIFA's image and global respect.
