Insecurity: Protesters Block Mokwa-Bida Highway Over Persistent Banditry

The busy Mokwa-Bida highway in Nigeria is currently blocked by protesters demonstrating against persistent banditry in the region. The demonstration has caused significant hardship for commuters, with all entry points into Mokwa reportedly sealed off by angry residents.

Reports indicate that many travelers have been stranded since Saturday night. One protester, Saliu Mohammed, claimed that suspected bandits recently abducted 15 local residents, though this number could not be independently verified. Mohammed alleged that security agencies have failed to rescue the victims and vowed that the protest would continue until the abducted individuals are freed.

Commuters expressed frustration over the prolonged blockade. Joy Amaechi, traveling to Abuja from Ilorin, lamented spending five hours at Mokwa with no resolution in sight, calling for urgent government intervention. A driver for a popular mass transit company, Henry Nwachuckwu, stated he arrived at Mokwa around 7 a.m. on Sunday, and as of 10:30 a.m., the protesters remained on the highway.
