Intense rain causes fallen trees and flooding in Alto Paraná

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms has battered the eastern region of Paraguay, particularly the Alto Paraná department. The intense weather, which occurred between Tuesday night and Wednesday, led to numerous fallen trees, widespread flooding in low-lying areas, and inundated streets and avenues in critical sectors.

In Ciudad del Este, several neighborhoods experienced significant disruption. A large tree toppled onto Carlos A. López and Pa’i Pérez avenues in the city center, damaging a parked Mercedes-Benz with Argentine plates and two cement power poles belonging to ANDE, the national electricity company.

Low-lying areas such as La Reina and Mburucuyá neighborhoods reported streets and avenues submerged under water. The situation was particularly dire near bridges and in areas with inadequate drainage systems. The street in front of the Regional Education Center in Ciudad del Este became completely flooded, forcing municipal traffic police to close it off to prevent vehicles from being swept away by the strong currents.

Meteorological data indicates significant rainfall amounts across the department. The Municipal Library station in Ciudad del Este recorded 64.6 mm of rain, while the Guaraní International Airport in Minga Guazú registered 46.8 mm. Other areas, including the Faculty of Agronomic Engineering and Puerto Paranambú, also reported substantial rainfall.
