Inter Miami names Cristian 'Kily' González as new coach after Guillermo Hoyos' exit

Inter Miami has appointed Cristian 'Kily' González as their new head coach, replacing Guillermo Hoyos. The club announced the change following a recent crisis in results.

González, a former player for Argentina's national team, will assume his duties once he receives the necessary work permits. Hoyos, who was close to Lionel Messi and his family, transitioned from sporting director to head coach in April after Javier Mascherano's unexpected resignation. Mascherano had led the franchise to its first league title in December.

The team's recent performance has been a significant concern, with Inter Miami experiencing one of its worst streaks since Messi's arrival in 2023. In their last five matches across MLS and the Leagues Cup, the team has suffered four losses and secured only one draw. They were eliminated from the Leagues Cup in the group stage, a stark contrast to their finalist appearance the previous year.

Currently, Inter Miami trails the Eastern Conference leader, Nashville, by 10 points with 13 regular-season games remaining. The club expressed gratitude for Hoyos' commitment and dedication during his tenure, noting he will remain with the team until González officially takes over.

Adding to the coaching turmoil, Hoyos will not be on the bench for the upcoming match against Montreal due to a suspension from MLS for repeated delays in his players returning to the field after breaks. González, also from Rosario like Messi, previously coached Rosario Central and Colón in Argentina and had a brief stint with Platense.
