Interoceanic Train Sees Accident Every 45 Days, Report Reveals

The Interoceanic Train's Line Z, inaugurated in December 2023, has been plagued by frequent accidents, with an average of one incident every 45 days. A total of 21 accidents have been recorded since its launch.

The "Root Cause Analysis of the Interoceanic Railway" report details 14 incidents in 2024 and six in 2025, including a fatal crash on December 28, 2025, that claimed 14 lives. This year, 2026, has already seen one cargo line accident on July 14.

The primary causes of these mishaps are landslides, track collapses, and vehicles crossing the tracks illegally. The report notes the first incident on February 2, 2024, was a derailment. Subsequent accidents involved issues like insufficient track elevation, collisions due to unauthorized movement of rail equipment, and vehicles disregarding traffic laws at crossings.

Further incidents include track damage from flooding leading to landslides and more vehicle collisions. One derailment was attributed to a poorly maintained private track. The frequency of these accidents raises serious concerns about the operational safety and infrastructure of the Interoceanic Train.
