Invasive Worms Devour Danish Marina Piles, Costing Millions in Repairs

A silent, persistent threat has inflicted a hefty bill on the Vejle Marina in Denmark, with invasive 'pile worms' causing an estimated 26 million kroner in damages. For the past 15 years, these wood-boring bivalves have been steadily consuming the wooden piles that support the marina, leading to a state of disrepair that now demands a complete overhaul. The municipality is now faced with the daunting task of replacing the compromised wooden structures with more durable concrete alternatives.

According to Paw Bro Larsen, the municipality's mobility chief, the extent of the damage has been particularly surprising given the robust nature of the wood originally used. He described the 'screen' protecting the harbor from waves and sand as being so badly affected that in some places, one could put a hand directly through it. As reported by Berlingske, the financial burden will be split between Vejle Municipality, which is footing 20 million kroner for the new piles, and the marina itself, which will cover the remaining six million.
