Iran Executes 28-Year-Old Woman Amidst Wave of Executions

A 28-year-old woman has been executed in Iran, according to human rights organizations. The woman, identified as A. Sarei, was arrested three years ago on suspicion of murdering her husband. At the time of her arrest, she was pregnant and gave birth in prison to a child who is now two years old. She had requested her mother care for the child after her death.

Human rights groups report that this execution marks the sixth time a woman has been sentenced to death in Iran this year. In 2023, a total of 48 women were executed, with 21 of those cases involving the murder of a spouse or fiancé. Activists emphasize that in several instances, the women had reportedly experienced abuse prior to these events.

Meanwhile, Iranian judicial authorities announced the execution of a man convicted of spying for Israel's intelligence service, Mossad. He was reportedly attempting to recruit individuals within Iran to "harm security." This execution followed another on Monday of a man accused of participating in armed attacks during anti-government protests earlier in the year. On Sunday, another man was executed for alleged espionage.

Human rights organizations state that Iran ranks second globally for the number of executions, following China. In 2023, at least 1,639 executions were recorded in the country.
