Scammers Defraud Residents of 284,400 Euros

Three residents of Vilnius and Kaunas reported losing a total of 284,400 euros in separate fraud cases, according to Lithuanian police.

A man born in 1964 told Kaunas County Police that unknown people fraudulently took 48,400 euros from him while he invested money through an online platform. The alleged fraud occurred between May 8 and Aug. 5 in Kaunas. Police opened a pretrial investigation into fraud.

Vilnius County Police also received a complaint from a man born in 1955. He said that in May, while at home in Vilnius, he met and communicated online with a woman who allegedly deceived him into giving her 44,000 euros. Police likewise began a fraud investigation.

The largest reported loss involved a Vilnius resident born in 1990. He said a friend deceived him into handing over his identity card, which carried an electronic-signature function, along with his login password. Using the data, the man was allegedly registered as the head of three companies whose accounts may have been used for illegal financial operations. The reported loss amounted to 192,000 euros. Police opened investigations into extortion and the theft or use of a stolen seal, stamp or document.
