Iran nears Hormuz deal with Oman as US suspends attack plan

Iran announced it is close to a deal with Oman concerning a new route through the Strait of Hormuz, just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump called off major strikes, citing a desire to allow for diplomacy.

Trump stated on his Truth Social platform that the "perimeters" of a deal had been agreed upon, leading him to cancel planned attacks for the "future benefit of the WORLD." He indicated this decision was made after a request from Iran and other Middle Eastern countries to hold off on strikes. However, Iranian media denied that Tehran had asked Trump not to strike.

Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL.

Hassan Ghashghavi, spokesman for Iran's parliament's national security commission, confirmed an "exchange of views" was occurring, with mediators working to revive a previous memorandum of understanding. He emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz is the "key to the matter right now."

The vital waterway for global energy supplies has been a focal point of diplomatic failures. Iran, which closed the strait during a past conflict, now insists on retaining control and charging tolls, a demand the U.S. rejects. Trump has stipulated that any deal must include the "Immediate, Complete and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat."
