Italian businessman admits orchestrating bomb attack on investigative journalist

Italian businessman Valter Lavitola has confessed to orchestrating a bomb attack on the home of renowned investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci. Lavitola, who was reportedly friends with Ranucci, made the admission to investigators after his arrest this week.

The motive, according to Lavitola's lawyer, Sergio Cola, was to enhance Ranucci's security amid mafia threats. "He did it for Ranucci's own good, because he was the target of attacks," Cola stated.

The attack in October 2025 involved a powerful, rudimentary bomb detonated in front of Ranucci's home near Rome. The journalist's car was destroyed, and his daughter's vehicle and the facade of their house also sustained damage. Four accomplices, allegedly hired by Lavitola, were arrested in late June and are suspected of carrying out the actual bombing.

Lavitola's lawyer denied that the attack was intended to boost Ranucci's popularity for a potential political career. Investigators have not suggested Ranucci was aware of the plot. Previously, Ranucci had reported receiving threatening messages, including bullets left at his door in 2024.
