Italian police chief seriously injured after being dragged by fleeing driver

A local police chief in Rovellasca, Italy, is in serious condition after a harrowing encounter during a routine traffic stop on August 12. Diego Monopoli, 36, the commander of the local police, was struck and dragged several meters by a fleeing driver who attempted to evade the checkpoint.

The incident occurred in the province of Como when Monopoli and another officer stopped a vehicle they considered suspicious. According to reports, the driver initially stopped but then suddenly accelerated as officers requested his documents. Monopoli was hit and dragged as the car sped away, eventually crashing into the protective structure of an electrical substation before the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

Monopoli sustained multiple injuries, including facial trauma and fractures, and was urgently transported by helicopter to Niguarda Hospital in Milan. The abandoned car is undergoing forensic examination, with investigators analyzing surveillance footage to trace the suspect's movements. Preliminary findings reportedly suggest the presence of cocaine in the vehicle, a detail that requires further verification.

The attack has drawn attention from the Italian Ministry of the Interior, with Undersecretary Nicola Molteni expressing solidarity with the injured commander and confidence in the authorities' efforts to apprehend the suspect. The search for the fugitive driver is ongoing.
