Italian Village Fines Tourists Up To 200 Euros for Going Shirtless or in Swimwear

The picturesque Italian village of Varenna, situated on Lake Como, is taking a stand against what it deems "impolite" tourist behavior by introducing fines for public indecency. Visitors are now subject to penalties of up to 200 euros if caught walking through the town shirtless or in swimwear. These attire rules, previously reserved for the lake's beaches and boat excursions, are part of a broader effort to maintain the village's aesthetic and ensure peace for its roughly 650 year-round residents. Varenna's mayor, Mauro Manzoni, stated that while the village is proud to host hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, the quality of life for locals cannot be sacrificed for mass tourism. Beyond dress codes, the new regulations also cap tour groups at 25 people to prevent overcrowding on the narrow streets and prohibit guides from using loudspeakers, aiming to preserve the tranquility of this popular destination.
