Jabari Matheson set for fourth 400m in two days at World U20 Championships

Jamaican sprinter Jabari Matheson is pushing his limits at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships, set to compete in his fourth 400-meter race within just two days. The demanding schedule highlights his endurance and ambition on the global stage.

Matheson secured a spot in the individual 400m semi-finals after a strong performance in his first-round heat, clocking 46.40 seconds. This race followed his demanding participation in the mixed 4x400m relay, where he ran the lead-off leg in both the preliminary round and the final. Despite the strenuous workload, Matheson acknowledged feeling the effects, telling reporters, "my legs are feeling a bit heavy, I need to go recover as best as I can."

His consistency is notable, having run 46.65 seconds in the relay heats and 46.48 seconds in the final. Although the Jamaican team narrowly missed a medal in the mixed relay, finishing fourth with a national Under-20 record of 3:18.78, Matheson's individual efforts are now the focus.

Joining Matheson in the next round of the 400m are fellow Jamaicans Daniellia Dixon and Shamieka McLean, who both qualified for the women's semi-finals. Dixon won her heat impressively in 53.19 seconds, expressing a desire to run even faster. McLean secured her spot by finishing third in her heat with a time of 53.95 seconds, having also competed in the mixed 4x400m relay.
