Jakarta Governor Responds to Violent Protests

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has asserted that demonstrations are a fundamental aspect of democratic life in Indonesia, emphasizing that such expressions of dissent are permissible as long as they adhere to established procedures.

"As a democratic country, demonstrations are allowed, permitted as long as they follow procedures and so on," Pramono told reporters on Friday. "But if they then engage in vandalism, anarchy, and so on, of course, no community will provide support for that."

The governor's remarks came after protests in Jakarta, which reportedly turned violent. He acknowledged the damage caused by the demonstrations and confirmed that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government had been monitoring the situation closely. Pramono stated that he, along with military and police leaders, had been observing the events unfold.

In the aftermath of the protests, which concluded in the early hours of Friday morning, city workers were deployed to clean up the affected areas. Governor Anung confirmed that he was coordinating with various regional government perangkat daerah (OPD) responsible for managing the impact of the demonstrations, ensuring a swift return to normalcy.
