Jakarta Initiative Collects Organic Waste Door-to-Door for Maggot Feed Production

Residents in RW 05 Kalisari, Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta, are increasingly adopting the habit of sorting their household waste, with organic kitchen scraps being collected directly from their homes by the East Jakarta Environmental Sub-agency. This "jemput bola" (door-to-door) service operates twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays.

The initiative is a direct implementation of Jakarta Governor's Instruction Number 5 of 2026, which mandates that all residents must sort their waste at the source. The collected organic waste is then transported to designated processing facilities where it is transformed into feed for maggots. This process is a key component of the city's strategy to reduce the volume of waste sent to final disposal sites and to encourage more environmentally friendly waste management practices.

During each collection day, approximately 1 to 1.5 tons of organic waste are gathered. This consistent collection highlights the residents' growing participation and the program's effectiveness in diverting significant amounts of organic material from landfills. The effort underscores the importance of source separation in managing the city's overall waste burden.

This collaborative effort between residents and environmental officers demonstrates a shared commitment to creating a cleaner and more sustainable Jakarta. By starting waste management at the household level, the program aims to build a foundation for a more resilient and environmentally conscious urban environment.
