Jakarta Ministry asks public not to link Menteng clash to SARA issues

Jakarta's Ministry of Law and Human Rights has called on the public to refrain from associating a recent fatal clash in Menteng, Central Jakarta, with sensitive issues such as race, religion, ethnicity, or intergroup relations (SARA). Mikael Azedo Harwito, head of the Jakarta Special Region office, stressed the importance of allowing the police to conduct a thorough and professional investigation.

We ask that the clashes that occurred not be linked to race, ethnicity, or religion.

Harwito urged the community to exercise restraint and avoid provocation, placing full trust in the police to resolve the incident. He emphasized that the legal proceedings must be conducted with professionalism, transparency, accountability, and a steadfast commitment to human rights principles. The Ministry of Law and Human Rights plans to coordinate with local stakeholders to enhance community vigilance and discourage any actions that violate the law or human rights.

Authorities have identified seven suspects involved in the separate incidents that culminated in the fatal clash. The first incident reportedly began when a group reacted aggressively after being reprimanded by residents for using noisy exhaust pipes on their motorcycles. This initial confrontation escalated when the group allegedly vandalized a food cart belonging to a vendor.

The second incident, a riot accompanied by assaults, ensued when residents reacted to the vandalism. Police have stated that the investigation is ongoing, and they are working to ensure that the process is fair and upholds all legal and human rights standards. The call for calm and adherence to the legal process aims to prevent further escalation and maintain social harmony in the area.
