Jakarta Police: Hundreds of Weapons at Private School Are Air Rifles, Not Firearms

Police in Jakarta have confirmed that hundreds of weapons discovered at a private school in South Jakarta are air rifles, not illegal firearms. The Metro Jaya Regional Police's direct inspection revealed 995 air rifles and one illegal firearm, a Franchi SPAS-15 shotgun, registered to an individual identified as DS, who is now deceased.

According to Kombes Budi Hermanto, head of public relations for the Metro Jaya Police, all seized items are in police custody. He stated that while 995 of the items were air rifles, the Franchi SPAS-15 was an illegal firearm. The air rifles included various types of air pistols and revolvers, all of 4.5mm caliber.

The police are investigating the ownership and placement of the illegal firearm. Regarding the 995 air rifles, the school's foundation management explained they were legally imported items. Importation documents from 2008 were provided, and the items were under the control of IW, a former foundation official. IW reportedly stated he was no longer a manager since April 2026 and had requested the items be moved. The new management eventually moved the items themselves in July 2026 and reported them to the police due to their appearance as potentially illegal weapons.

Police plan to summon IW for questioning to clarify ownership, permits, possession, location, and purpose of the air rifles. IW's lawyer, Alhadid Endar Putra, asserted that the 995 items are airsoft guns, legally possessed with permits from the Indonesian Airsoft Association (Perbakin).
