James Cameron Hints at Winding Down 'Avatar' Work, Eyes Other Stories

Acclaimed director James Cameron has suggested that his extensive involvement with the "Avatar" film franchise might be winding down. Cameron, who has directed all three "Avatar" films to date, including the recent "Avatar: Fire And Ash," indicated in a recent interview that he is considering turning his attention to other stories after the planned sequels.

Speaking after receiving the Governor General's Award for artistic merit in Canada, Cameron reflected on his career. He recalled a period where he took a break to build a submarine for a solo dive to the deepest point on Earth, before returning to "Avatar," a process he described as nearly continuous since then.

Cameron is now contemplating the broader picture of his directorial future. "I am now looking at the bigger picture and asking myself, what are the other stories I want to tell? How many of them should I direct personally, and how many should I write or produce and hand over to other filmmakers?" he explained. He is evaluating multiple projects, questioning which will bring the greatest benefit and contribute to making the world a better place for his children.

While "Avatar 4" and "Avatar 5" are still scheduled for release in 2029 and 2031 respectively, with part of the fourth installment already filmed, Cameron is contemplating a shift. He is in a "transitional phase," planning what could be the final chapter of his career, the duration of which remains uncertain. He is considering a gradual withdrawal from the day-to-day oversight of film creation, potentially focusing more on writing and producing for other directors.
